In a notable development within Maharashtra’s Mahayuti coalition, the Ajit Pawar-led faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has asserted its claim to the Maval Lok Sabha seat, currently held by Shiv Sena MP Shrirang Barne. This move signals the first signs of discord within the ruling alliance. The BJP has also expressed its interest in the seat. However, Barne remains undeterred, citing Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s approval for his recontesting.
“In the next 8-10 days, we will place our demand before Mahayuti leaders,” stated Sunil Shelke, the Maval MLA from the NCP’s Ajit Pawar faction. While Shelke questions Barne’s accomplishments during his nine-year tenure, Barne counters by emphasizing the green signal received from Chief Minister Shinde.
Shelke further emphasizes the NCP’s dominance in Pimpri, Chinchwad, and Maval constituencies and additional influence in three other Maval Lok Sabha constituencies in Raigad district. Criticizing Barne’s performance, Shelke alleges Barne’s electoral success is solely based on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s charisma.
Notably, Shelke clarifies that he does not oppose Barne’s candidature, indicating that the alliance dynamics must be adhered to. The BJP, led by former MLA Bala Bhegde, also expresses its intention to compete for the Maval ticket. The decision ultimately rests with the Mahayuti leader.
With the NCP openly declaring its intent to contest the seat, speculation arises about the potential candidature of Ajit Pawar’s son, Parth Pawar, who previously faced defeat against Barne. Sanjay Tatkare, the spokesperson for the Ajit Pawar faction, defends the demand for the seat, highlighting the faction’s strength and emphasizing that the party’s high command will make the final decision.
