Navratri, one of the most widely celebrated Hindu festivals, spans nine days, each dedicated to a different form of Goddess Durga. Observed with fasting, prayers, and rituals, these nine days symbolize the triumph of good over evil and the spiritual journey of devotion, strength, and purity. Each day honors a distinct incarnation of the Goddess, with devotees performing specific pujas, wearing designated colors, and reciting mantras to seek her blessings. In 2025, Sharadiya Navratri begins on September 22, which falls on the Pratipada (first day) of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Ashwin.
The first day of Navratri is dedicated to Maa Shailputri, meaning “Daughter of the Mountain,” who is considered a form of Maa Parvati. She symbolizes strength, purity, and spiritual wisdom. In various parts of India, she is also revered as Devi Sati, Devi Hemvati, or Devi Vrisharudha, known for performing severe penance to win Lord Shiva as her husband. Maa Shailputri is depicted riding a bull, holding a trident (Trishul) in her right hand and a lotus in her left hand. Worshipping her on the first day is believed to lay the foundation for devotion, courage, and prosperity for the remaining days of Navratri.
