Setting an exemplary standard for cleanliness, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) swiftly addressed the aftermath of Diwali celebrations by cleaning up all traces of waste. The ‘Swachh Diwali Shubh Diwali’ campaign, led by Municipal Commissioner Rajesh Narvekar, was executed by a team of 374 cleaning staff, aligning with the ‘Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0’ of the Central Government.
The special cleanliness drive, conducted between 1:00 am and 5:00 am, specifically after the night of Lakshmi Puja, showcased a thoughtful response to the increased waste generated during Diwali, especially from firecrackers. Involving 375 cleaning staff, 10 refuse compactor vehicles, and 13 mini-tipper vehicles, the initiative demonstrated the scale and commitment of the cleanup effort.
The collected waste, including remnants of firecrackers and other materials, was efficiently transported to the Solid Waste Management Project site at Turbhe for scientific processing, emphasizing environmental sustainability and responsible waste management.
Deputy Commissioner Dr. Babasaheb Rajale’s hands-on involvement in planning and overseeing the cleaning campaign highlighted effective leadership and dedication. The positive response from citizens, expressing satisfaction with the midnight-to-dawn cleaning efforts, affirmed the success of the initiative.
Notably, the seamless continuation of regular morning cleaning following the special midnight campaign underscored the well-organized planning and execution of the cleanup drive.
