West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is facing criticism over her response to the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. In her recent remarks, Banerjee urged the public to “return to Durga Pujo” and leave the protests behind, sparking outrage from various quarters.
During a press conference, Banerjee addressed the ongoing protests demanding justice for the victim, stating, “It has been a month since the incident on August 9. I request you to return to the festivities of Pujo and let the CBI ensure justice as soon as possible.”
She further commented on the disruptions caused by the protests, saying, “Protests on the streets every night disturb many people, including the elderly. We have been lenient with noise control regulations after 10 pm. It has been a month now.”
The Chief Minister emphasized that the investigation is now under the CBI’s purview and urged for justice through a fast-track court. She also criticized those defaming Bengal on social media and WhatsApp, saying, “Bengal’s reputation is being tarnished worldwide by those who have left but continue to criticize.”
The remarks drew sharp criticism from the victim’s parents, who questioned the insensitivity of Banerjee’s comments. “What about our celebrations when we have lost our daughter? Would she have spoken the same way if this had happened to her family? We won’t celebrate Durga Puja or any other festival for years to come,” they said, according to a PTI report.
Opposition parties, including the BJP and CPM, have condemned the Chief Minister’s comments. BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari, Leader of the Opposition in the Bengal Assembly, criticized Banerjee’s remarks, questioning whether she sees the public as mere puppets. “Does she think people will simply stop protesting when asked? The Pujo festival hasn’t even started yet, and the issue remains unresolved. The power of the people will bring change,” he posted on X.
Senior CPM leader Sujan Chakraborty also criticized Banerjee, suggesting that she hopes the protests will subside as people shift focus to celebrations, thereby overlooking the ongoing safety and security concerns.
