Ex-Navyman Dhanveer Singh Negi, aged 57, halted at the sight of a gathering on a bridge over the Hindon canal in Ghaziabad, where an 18-year-old was struggling in the water. Negi, a former petty officer with the Navy’s marine commandos (Marcos), swiftly acted, diving into the murky canal to rescue the drowning youth. “I’m a soldier. I can’t watch anyone die in front of my eyes,” Negi remarked, reflecting on his immediate response to the crisis.

Negi, originally from Pauri Garhwal and currently residing in Indirapuram, recounted his training in underwater diving and his tenure with the Navy, where he honed his skills in rescue operations. Despite retiring in 2000 and now working as a trainer at a merchant navy institute, Negi’s instinct to save lives remained undiminished. “When I took the boy out of the water, I also gave him CPR,” Negi shared, emphasizing his commitment to immediate action in critical situations.
