The Madhya Pradesh High Court has cancelled the anticipatory bail granted to Giribala Singh, the mother-in-law of Twisha Sharma, in connection with her death, marking a key development in the case.
In its 17-page order, vacation judge Devnarayan Mishra observed that the trial court had failed to properly consider material facts, including WhatsApp chats and statements made by Twisha’s family members. The High Court said the allegations against Giribala Singh required deeper scrutiny under Sections 80(2), 85 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act.
Speaking to NewsX in an exclusive interview, Twisha’s father Navnidhi Sharma said the order had strengthened the family’s faith in the justice system. He thanked the Supreme Court, lawyers, the media and people across India for supporting the family’s campaign for justice.
“This is the first step towards justice and it is quite satisfactory. I believe in the CBI, I believe in the system,” he said, adding that the development had sent a strong message that “nobody is above the law”.
Sharma said the family was struggling to cope with Twisha’s death, calling it an “irreparable loss”. He said the family had been unable to sleep properly as it continued its fight for justice.
Welcoming the CBI takeover of the case and the decision to conduct a second autopsy, Sharma said he was hopeful that the truth would come out. He also said the family had received support from people across the country, especially on social media.
Calling dowry deaths a “curse” on society, Sharma urged families and young women to act early against signs of domestic violence. Quoting the submission made in the Supreme Court, he said, “It is better to have a divorced daughter than a dead one.”
He added that society must change its mindset and give women the same respect, dignity and love that men receive within families.
