Tripura Floods: IMD Red Alert Issued As Death Toll Hits 26

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for South Tripura and an orange alert for Dhalai and Gomati districts due to forecasts of heavy rainfall amid a severe flood crisis in the state.

Flood Crisis Claims 26 Lives

As of Sunday, the death toll from the flooding has reached 26, according to the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC). Over 117,000 individuals have been displaced and are currently residing in 525 relief camps across Tripura.

Significant Economic Damage and Central Assistance

The floods have resulted in approximately ₹5000 crores in damage to the state. In response, the Central Government has approved a ₹40-crore assistance package for rescue, relief, and rehabilitation efforts. Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on social media that eleven teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), three Army columns, and four Air Force helicopters are actively involved in supporting the state’s emergency response.

Weather and Safety Advisory

The IMD predicts light to moderate rainfall for the coming days. In light of the ongoing situation, local authorities have urged residents to exercise caution. Educational institutions, including government, government-aided, and private schools, remain closed until further notice.
