New Delhi: Spicejet’s domestic market share declined for three consecutive months even as its on-time performance remained the worst among all major Indian airlines, according to the May month report released by the Civil Aviation Ministry on Tuesday.
According to the data, Spicejet’s domestic market saw a sharp fall to 2.5% in May from 3.4% in April this year. The airline has been seeing a drop since March when its market share dropped by 0.1% compared to 3.9% in February.
The budget-carrier’s punctuality standing also remained low as it finished fifth among top-5 operators. Spicejet’s On-Time Performance (OTP) registered a laggard 26%, which is 44% behind fourth-ranked Alliance Air.
At 4%, Spicejet also registered the highest percentage of flight cancellations among major domestic air carriers.
The monthly data also revealed IndiGo, the market leader, and Air India Group largely retaining their respective market share, with the latter bettering it by about 1%. Akasa Air, launched in 2022, continued to improve its market share for the fifth consecutive month this year.
The Rakesh Jhunjhunwala family-backed airline registered 5.8% market share in May, up from 4.8% in January. The carrier also inched closer to IndiGo in OTP, securing a second rank with over 78% ‘punctuality’.
Among airports, Chennai International Airport stood first in OTP with over 92% flights arriving or departing the airport within 15 minutes of their scheduled time.
