Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a heartfelt op-ed on Saturday, honored the late Ratan Tata, commemorating one month since the iconic industrialist and philanthropist passed away. PM Modi praised Tata’s unwavering patriotism and contributions to India, noting the profound impact he had across all sectors of society.
Reflecting on Tata’s resilience, Modi highlighted his swift reopening of Mumbai’s Taj Hotel following the 26/11 terror attacks, describing it as a powerful message of India’s defiance against terrorism. “For millions of Indians, Shri Ratan Tata’s patriotism shone brightest in times of crisis. His immediate response to reopen the iconic Taj Hotel was a rallying call for the nation—India stands united, refusing to yield to terrorism,” Modi wrote.
In his tribute, PM Modi shared memories of his close relationship with Tata, mentioning numerous collaborative efforts, particularly in Gujarat, where Tata made significant investments. Modi also recounted the recent inauguration of an aircraft manufacturing complex in Vadodara, a project Tata had helped initiate in partnership with Spain.
The Prime Minister highlighted Tata’s compassionate side, emphasizing his dedication to philanthropy and animal welfare, a cause especially dear to Tata, known for his love for his pets. Modi reflected, “For young Indians, Shri Ratan Tata was an inspiration—a reminder that dreams are worth pursuing, and that success can coexist with compassion and humility.”
Modi also applauded Tata’s support for the Swachh Bharat Mission, recounting Tata’s heartfelt message on the mission’s 10th anniversary, one of his final public appearances. Tata’s commitment to the cleanliness movement, Modi noted, was rooted in his belief that sanitation and hygiene were critical to India’s progress.
Concluding his tribute, PM Modi honored Tata’s enduring legacy, describing it as a model of responsible business with a focus on societal well-being. “As we remember him today, we are reminded of the society he envisioned—where business can be a force for good, where every individual’s potential is valued, and where progress is measured in the well-being and happiness of all. Generations will be grateful to him for making India a better, kinder, and more hopeful place,” Modi said.
