Srinagar, July 31: Terrorists struck again in south Kashmir on Friday evening, opening fire on two non-local labourers at a brick kiln in the Kilam area of Kulgam district, killing one and critically injuring another in the latest attack targeting civilians in the Valley.
According to officials, the terrorists fired at the labourers while they were at work before fleeing the scene. Both victims sustained critical bullet injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital. However, one of the labourers succumbed to his injuries before he could be shifted for advanced treatment, while the other was referred to Government Medical College (GMC), Anantnag, where he is undergoing surgery.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir, V.K. Birdi, confirmed the incident and said both victims were non-local labourers. He said one of them died during treatment, while the other remains admitted in the hospital. Following the attack, police and security forces rushed to the area, cordoned off the locality and launched a massive search operation to trace the terrorists.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha strongly condemned the attack and said he had spoken to Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat and other senior security officials to review the situation.
In a post on X, the Lieutenant Governor said the deceased labourer hailed from Chhattisgarh and the injured worker was also from the same state. He directed security forces to intensify anti-terror operations and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
“I strongly condemn this cowardly terrorist attack. I have directed our security forces to step up their operations and eliminate the terrorists. J&K Police and security forces have cordoned off the area and launched an operation to bring the perpetrators to justice. My deepest condolences to the bereaved family and prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured. The J&K administration and the entire nation stand with the affected families,” the Lieutenant Governor said.
The attack comes less than ten days after terrorists shot dead a police officer in Anantnag town, raising fresh concerns over attempts by terror outfits to target both civilians and security personnel in the Union Territory.

The latest incident has once again underlined the persistent threat posed by terrorists targeting civilians and migrant workers in Jammu and Kashmir. Security agencies have intensified surveillance and anti-terror operations across the Valley as efforts continue to identify and neutralise those behind the Kulgam attack.
