New Delhi: Stand-up comedian Madhur Virli has been asked to appear before the National Commission for Women (NCW) for mocking rape victims, after one of his old comedy clip recirculated online.

Virli has been summoned to show on June 22, the same day when Mumbai-based comic Pranit More and Himanshu Jangra have also been asked to appear in ‘Rs. 370 biryani’ joke row.

In a clip from his 2024 show titled ‘Love & Latex’ that has gone viral, Virli is heard making remarks about rape and murder, where he suggests a causation between victim’s behaviour and murder after rape.

Social media users have criticised the comedian for his ‘inappropriate’ and ‘insensitive’ remarks that trivialises sexual violence.

However, the IIT Delhi graduate comedian issued an apology on June 14 after the clip went viral. Virli also stated that he realised the joke was inappropriate soon after uploading it nearly two years ago and took the video down long before the clip started recirculating.

Recently, comic Pranit More was also at the centre of controversy after one of his crowd-work clips, where Himanshu Jangra, an audience member, comments about spending Rs. 370 on a biryani date and expecting ‘something’ in return went viral. More was criticised for not objecting to the remarks by Jangra, and instead laughing along with the audience.
