N. Kotiswar Singh Takes Oath As First Supreme Court Judge From Manipur

N. Kotiswar Singh, the first Supreme Court judge from the state of Manipur, took oath on Thursday, July 18. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud administered the oath to two new judges of the Supreme Court, following the Centre’s notification of their appointments on Tuesday.

About Nongmeikapam Kotiswar Singh

Justice Nongmeikapam Kotiswar Singh was born in Imphal on March 1, 1963, and served as Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh from February 15, 2023, till his recent nomination to the Supreme Court. He begun his judicial career at the Gauhati High Court, where his father, Justice N. Ibotombi Singh, was also a judge.

Justice Singh was appointed as a judge of the Gauhati High Court in 2011. Following the formation of the High Court of Manipur, he was transferred to the Manipur High Court.

In February 2023, he assumed the position of Chief Justice of the High Court for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

In 1983, Justice Singh graduated from Kirori Mal College in Delhi with a degree in Political Science. He later earned an LL.B. degree from Delhi University in 1986. Justice Singh became an advocate in 1986 with the Bar Council of Delhi and thereafter transferred to the Bar Councils of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim.

After completing his law degree, Justice Singh began his legal career at the Gauhati High Court. He attained senior advocate status in March 2008 and was appointed as an additional judge in October 2011. Justice Singh also practiced law briefly in the Supreme Court.
