Madras HC issues notice to state on Tamil Nadu BJP Secy’s request to quash FIR against him

The State of Tamil Nadu has received a notice from the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court in response to a petition filed by BJP state secretary SG Suryah seeking to have the FIR against him over his tweet criticism of Madurai MP and CPI Councillor dismissed. The case was heard by Justice Nagarjun on Tuesday. He sent a notice to the state and postponed the hearing until October 18. The Madurai Cybercrime Police team detained SG Suryah in June of this year at his home in Chennai as a result of his social media post criticizing Madurai MP Su Venkatesan.

He was the subject of a case that was filed under the Information Technology Act and several different sections of the Indian Penal Code. SG Suryah had previously been granted conditional bail by the Madurai Judicial Magistrate. A Madurai sanitation worker who died on the job was mentioned by the BJP State Secretary Suryah in a harsh letter he wrote to Communist Party of India (CPI) Councilor Viswanathan. He claimed that because he was made to work in feces, his body experienced an allergic reaction.

In the letter attached to his tweet, Suryah lashed out at Viswanathan for his double standards, for forcing the deceased sanitation worker to resort to manual scavenging despite being aware that it is prohibited by law.
In the same tweet, Suryah criticized Madurai MP Venkatesan for his silence. “Your fake politics of separatism stinks worse than that cesspool, find a way to live as a human being, mate!” a rough translation of his tweet in Tamil read.
