Jaishankar Compares UN To ‘Old Company’ Falling Behind On Key Issues

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, speaking at the Kautilya Economic Conclave in Delhi, compared the United Nations to an outdated company. He pointed out the organization’s declining relevance in addressing major global crises, stating, “The UN is like an old company, not entirely keeping up with the market, but occupying the space.”

UN Fails to Address Key Global Crises

Jaishankar highlighted examples of the UN’s inefficacy, including its weak response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, and the rising tensions in the Middle East. “Where is the UN on these issues? Essentially a bystander,” he questioned, emphasizing that countries are now finding alternative solutions outside the UN framework, such as the COVAX initiative during Covid-19.

Call for UN Reforms

Jaishankar reiterated India’s longstanding call for reforms in multilateral institutions, especially the expansion of the UN Security Council. He suggested that while the UN will continue to exist, the most active problem-solving space is now happening outside of it.
