New Delhi: The Railways has been alerted following recent incidents of train fires and the recovery of burnt clothing from a train coach near Howrah Station in West Bengal.

Agencies and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) have launched a large-scale investigation after CCTV footage captured a highly suspicious act in the security restroom near the Cab Road area of Howrah Station. The footage shows a suspect allegedly throwing a cover or object, leading to an immediate fire and smoke scare. The incident took place during peak passenger hours, apparently with the intent to create panic and chaos.

The incident comes amid recent warnings and intelligence inputs indicating that the railways are increasingly being targeted as a soft spot for deliberate sabotage.

According to sources, the incident occurred shortly before reports of a fire in a coach of the Mithila Express. Officials believe the act was aimed not only at disrupting railway operations but also at creating a stampede-like situation among thousands of passengers.

An investigation is underway to identify the suspect seen in the footage and to uncover any larger network behind the alleged coordinated attempt to disrupt public safety. High-alert protocols have been activated at major railway terminals across the country.

Meanwhile, the Railway Ministry has also launched a drive to ensure the safety of railway property and passengers. Amid the recent incidents targeting the railways, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw held a security review meeting with field officials in New Delhi on Thursday.

He appealed to passengers to remain alert and vigilant while travelling. To curb anti-social elements targeting the railways, the public has been urged to report any suspicious activity or individuals to the railway helpline number 139.

Officials also assured that intelligence gathering from the field would be strengthened through the use of modern technologies, including CCTV surveillance and artificial intelligence.
