As Heatwave continue to plague many regions of India with some regions touching 45 degree celsius, let us understand, how this weather phenomenon, can pose serious health risks to the human body this summer season and what exactly defines heatwave.

Definition Of HeatWave 

In simple words, heatwave generally refers to a weather phenomenon, which generally consists of abnormally high temperatures.

Generally, the definition differs across regions, which is mainly determined by thresholds of specific temperatures, in absolute temperature value.

In some counties, the heatwave is defined on the basis of heat index. Which considers both temperature, humidity levels and extreme percentile of recorded temperature.

When Heatwave Is Declared In India? 

Meanwhile, In India, the heatwave is declared, when the maximum temperature touches or even crosses the threshold of 40-degree Celsius in plains. While in Hills, it is supposed touch at least 30 degree celsius.

These threshold possesses the potential to cause heat-related illness and fatalities. Especially among young, elderly and those who are already battling pre-existing illness.

Amidst the ongoing heatwave, how does it affect our bodies and how can we safeguard ourselves? Let’s explore.

How Does It Affect Our Body? 

Unfortunately, the effect of heatwave on people can be adverse. Meaning, it can be severe and life-threatening.

  1. Heatwave can potentially cause dehydration and a host of heat-related illness.
  2. It can also lead to problems of ederna (swelling), Fever (below 39 degree celsius) and syncope (fainting).  Individuals who are dealing with all these, may suffer from heat cramps.
  3. Another extreme condition like Heat Exhaustion can be manifested through fatigue, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, muscle cramps and sweating.
  4. And the most severe disease coming out of heatwave is heat stroke, which is usually defined by “Body temperatures of 40 degree Celsius, accompanied by delirium, seizures or in extreme cases, coma.

How Can We Keep Ourselves Safe? 

However, in order to mitigate the adverse effects of a heatwave, the following tips may assist in ensuring safety.

  1. Don’t Go Out In the sun between 12.00 noon and 3.00 p.m., as these sun rays are at their best, Intense!!
  2. Drink a lot of water to stay hydrated.
  3. However, if it is required of you to be out, wear light coloured, light weight and loose clothes. For additional measures, make use of protective goggles, umbrella/hat, shoes or chappals.
  4. Avoid exhaustive activities especially between 12 noon and 3 p.m.
  5. Don’t consume alcohol, tea, coffee, and carbonated soft drinks, as they tend to dehydrate the body.
  6. Don’t consume high-protein and stale food.
  7. And last, if experiencing any problem, look for medical attention immediately.
