Diversity only strengthens India: Sanjeev Chopra

TedEx speaker Sanjeev Chopra, while speaking on how the idea of India has become, said, “Nowadays, when the state governments are formed. They seem to be pushed to focus on public welfare. And this pattern seems common. They seem to be promising transformation within hundred days. Therefore, country has done well and the credit goes to Mr. Modi. But the evolution is a process and it started just after we got independence. The whole process started from 1947. They (Britishers) wanted to split the land of Hindustan into India and Pakistan. But the name of our country is engraved in our constitution which is “India that is Bharat”. Bharat is the successor to Hindustan.”
“Moreover, if we speak of Jawaharlal Nehru, B R Ambedkar and all other important leaders of the time, they were fully committed to the development of the nation. We have come to this point together irrespective of religion. The first line in our constitution is “we the people of India”. The line does not point out to any religion.”
“Initially the government used to be inclusive in its narrative. As it went on, they were unable to meet the requirements of developments which resulted in them being questioned. When the development did not take place they opted for the politics of appeasement. Because it was comparatively easier and would also pull the votes for their party.”
He added, “However the crux of India is that it offered right to education and right to health and right to every other thing to everyone equally and it is not given by any one party but the government. The first three articles of our constitution are very clear. Diversity only strengthens India. If you look at Uttar Pradesh and Uttrakhand, both states have done well after they were reorganized. Spirit of India has always been inclusive. Thereby, India has been able to carry the diversity. If we don’t do that or unable to that, we will be in history books like USSR.”
