On Monday, Congress leaders paid tribute to former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on his 60th death anniversary at his memorial, Shanti Van, in New Delhi. Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge, party’s Parliamentary Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, and Rajya Sabha MP Ajay Maken were among those who honored Nehru’s memory.

In a post on social media platform X, Kharge praised Nehru as the “Jewel of India,” acknowledging his significant contributions to the nation. Kharge highlighted Nehru’s role as a key architect of modern India, emphasizing his efforts in advancing the country in scientific, economic, and industrial domains, and his dedication to democracy. He quoted Nehru, underscoring the importance of national defense, progress, unity, and equal opportunities for all citizens, irrespective of their religion, state, or language. Kharge affirmed that the Congress Party continues to pursue the path of justice championed by Nehru.

Jawaharlal Nehru, a prominent freedom fighter and a pivotal figure in India’s independence movement, became the first Prime Minister of independent India in 1947. He held this position for over 16 years until his death from a heart attack on May 27, 1964. His tenure was succeeded by Lal Bahadur Shastri, the second Prime Minister of India. Nehru is also recognized as a founder of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). Known affectionately as ‘Chacha Nehru’ for his affection towards children, his birth anniversary on November 14 is celebrated as Children’s Day in India.
