CJI Chandrachud Reminds Lawyer He’s ‘Still in Charge’ Amid Courtroom Exchange

Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, who is set to retire in November, reminded a lawyer on Thursday that he is “still in charge” despite his short remaining tenure. The remark came as the CJI reprimanded the lawyer for attempting to cross-check details of a previously dictated order with a court officer.

‘How dare you’: CJI

“How dare you ask the court master what I dictated? Tomorrow, will you come to my house and ask my secretary what I’m doing?” CJI Chandrachud sternly questioned, adding that lawyers have “lost all sense.”

The CJI, who will be succeeded by Justice Sanjiv Khanna, warned the lawyer not to engage in such behavior again.

This exchange followed a recent incident where CJI Chandrachud objected to a lawyer saying “yeah” instead of “yes,” reminding him that the courtroom is not a “coffee shop.” Throughout his tenure, the CJI has maintained strict decorum, previously admonishing advocates for raising their voices or disrupting proceedings.
