Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar transferred ₹225.25 crore in flood relief to 3,21,792 families via direct benefit transfer (DBT) on Thursday. The initiative is part of the state’s ongoing efforts to provide financial support to families affected by severe flooding across the state.

Ongoing Support for Flood Victims

The Bihar government has been distributing ₹7,000 to each flood-affected family. So far, a total of ₹532.22 crore has been disbursed to support families who have suffered due to the floods. The flood relief efforts aim to assist people in rebuilding their lives as the state battles the aftermath of two rounds of severe flash floods.

Crops and Farmers Also Impacted

In addition to the financial aid to families, the state government announced that ₹590 crore would soon be transferred to farmers whose crops were damaged in both phases of flooding. The crop losses are estimated at ₹229 crore from the first phase and ₹261 crore from the second.

Flood Impact on Bihar

The floods, which started last month, have impacted over 45 lakh people across more than 30 out of Bihar’s 38 districts. The first phase of the floods was triggered by a rise in the Ganga river’s water levels, while the second phase was caused by water discharge from rivers in Nepal.

Key Projects Discussed for Flood Control

A high-level meeting in New Delhi, chaired by Debashree Mukherjee (Secretary, Ministry of Jal Shakti), discussed long-term flood mitigation measures. Key projects, including the Kosi-Mechi Link, Indrapuri Reservoir, and Tilaiya-Dhadhar Diversion Scheme, were highlighted as crucial for flood control, irrigation, and water supply.

The government’s continued relief and planning efforts are aimed at minimizing the impact of future floods and providing necessary support to affected communities.
