Bidar: A 28-year-old government doctor at the Bidar Institute of Medical Sciences (BRIMS) was assaulted by a patient’s attendants in the early hours of May 22 following an argument over X-rays during emergency treatment.

The victim, Dr Tukaram, has lodged a complaint with the New Town Police Station. Police have booked seven accused and others for assault using dangerous weapons and criminal intimidation.

Resident doctors at BRIMS staged a protest against the patient’s attendants and demanded the immediate arrest of all those involved in the attack.

In his complaint to the police, Dr Tukaram, an Orthopaedic Resident Doctor at BRIMS, Bidar, said he was on emergency casualty duty in the early hours of May 22. At around 1 am, while he was attending to and treating an injured patient, a group of patient attendants and relatives allegedly entered the casualty area unlawfully, abused him in filthy language, threatened him with dire consequences, obstructed him from performing his official duty and physically assaulted him.

They allegedly pushed him to the ground and punched and kicked him on the face, head and abdomen.

Resident doctors of BRIMS, along with members of the Karnataka Association of Resident Doctors (KARD), staged a protest and demanded the arrest of the assailants. They also urged the authorities to ensure immediate protection and adequate security for doctors and healthcare staff at BRIMS.
