Nallathamby Kalaiselvi on Saturday has been appointed as the Director General (DG) of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).

Taking to Twitter CSIR tweeted, “Dr N Kalaselvi has been appointed as the DG, CSIR and Secretary, DSIR. Hearty congratulations to Dr Kalaselvi from the CSIR Family.”

Moreover, Kalaiselvi is the first woman to lead an association of 38 research institutions in the country. Kalaiselvi hails from Ambasamudhram, a small town in the Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu. Kalaiselvi has worked for more than 25 years on electrochemical power systems in particular.

Meanwhile, after Shekhar Mande’s retirement Rajesh Gokhale, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology, was given the additional charge of the CSIR. Mande superannuated in April.

However, Kalaiselvi is known for her work in the field of Lithium-sulfur batteries. At the same institute, Kalaiselvi started her career in research as an entry-level scientist. Kalaiselvi made key contributions to the National Mission for Electric Mobility and has more than 125 research papers and six patents.
