Nagaland passes a motion to repeal the Municipal Act of 2001

On Tuesday, the first session of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly ended with members of the House adopting a motion to repeal the Nagaland Municipal Act, 2001.
Members of the House voted unanimously to repeal the Nagaland Municipal Act 2001 with instant effect.
Following a strong protest from different tribal ‘hohos ‘ and civil societies, Nagaland Municipal Act, 2021, the Act was repealed.

The house also decided that the law governing urban local bodies be passed as soon as possible, taking into account all of the complaints of the interested parties, so that the election could be held in accordance with the law.
The members also agreed that the election of Urban Local Bodies, ULBs could not take place unless the Nagaland Municipal Act 2001 was abolished.

The Supreme Court had already directed the state government to perform the ULB election in the state, and the State Election Commissioner had been notified that the election would take place on May 16, 2023.
