A judge has ordered Elon Musk, along with other key parties, to appear in a Philadelphia court on Thursday in response to a lawsuit aimed at halting a $1 million daily giveaway to registered voters in battleground states. The suit, filed by the Philadelphia district attorney’s office, claims the giveaway by Musk’s America PAC which supports Donald Trump’s campaign violates state law as an “illegal lottery” that solicits Pennsylvanians’ personal data.
The PAC’s offer has stirred concerns around election integrity and federal law, as it incentivizes registered voters who sign Musk’s online free-speech and gun-rights petition. According to CNN, the Department of Justice has warned that Musk’s giveaway could breach federal statutes prohibiting payments in exchange for voter registration. Legal experts remain split on whether the initiative crosses legal boundaries, with some citing potential violations.
Pennsylvania is expected to be a key swing state in the tight presidential race between Trump and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris. On social media, Musk, through America PAC, emphasized the state’s importance, tweeting, “Pennsylvania will be a decisive Republican victory.”
Governor Josh Shapiro previously suggested that Musk’s use of “dark money” to influence the election should be investigated, adding that funneling funds directly to voters raised “deeply concerning” issues. At a recent Pittsburgh town hall, Musk amplified his support for Trump and presented a $1 million check to a Trump supporter, sparking applause from attendees. Musk argued that a loss for Trump could result in “a single-party state,” which he warned would be “worse than California.”
