Responding to the municipal chief’s warning, the anti-encroachment department of the Thane Municipal Corporation conducted demolitions on nine illegal constructions across Diva, Kalwa, and Thane West wards. The operations included the complete demolition of a three-storey structure in MS Compound, Diva, along with other unauthorized constructions.
In the same ward, the squad demolished 25 columns, a 2,500 sq ft construction, and the plinth of another illegal structure. Additionally, a two-storeyed structure with a 40-column plinth underwent RCC construction, which was also demolished. The operation involved the use of two poklanes, three JCBs, and 50 laborers, with a 40-strong police contingent providing security.
Similarly, in Diva East’s Mumbradevi Colony, the squad removed the 22-column plinth construction of a structure, along with two structures that had initiated foundation excavations. The demolition team comprised one poklane, two JCBs, 30 laborers, and 30 police personnel. In Kalwa ward, an illegal construction with 35 rooms near Swami Samarth Math was demolished, and one plinth-level construction was dismantled in the Vitawa area.
Another team focused on demolishing the unauthorized fifth and sixth floors of a six-storey building near Balkum crematorium in Majiwada-Manpada ward. The operation utilized three tractor breakers, one poklane, two JCBs, and 30 laborers, supported by 30 police personnel.
Thane Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar, emphasizing a zero-tolerance approach, had warned of stringent action against officials failing to address illegal constructions. He directed beat inspectors and beat mukadams to daily survey ward areas, reporting any unauthorized constructions promptly. Bangar also cautioned senior officials and water supply department officials of disciplinary action if illegal constructions persisted and water connections were provided.
The demolition initiative follows Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s assurance to the state legislature that not only would illegal constructions face action, but cognizable offenses would be registered against civic officials providing tacit protection to such structures.
