A 54-year-old resident of Vikhroli in Mumbai fell victim to online fraud after attempting to enhance his credit score, resulting in a loss of Rs 1 lakh. The incident, reported on Wednesday, is currently under investigation as the police work to trace the fraudsters involved.
Devendra Thota shared that he received an email a few days ago, purportedly from “Credit Mantri,” claiming that his CIBIL score was subpar and could be improved. The email instructed him to pay a fee, providing a link for the transaction. Succumbing to the request, Thota entered details of his ICICI and IDBI Bank accounts along with necessary documents.
On November 30, Thota was alerted by ICICI Bank that Rs 50,000 had been transferred from his account. Subsequently, he received a similar message from IDBI Bank, confirming another Rs 50,000 transfer. Realizing he had not initiated these transactions and recalling the email, Thota contacted both banks, discovering he had fallen victim to fraud.
Having recognized the deception, Thota promptly reported the incident to the Vikhroli police.
