A balcony collapse at a four-storey residential building in south Mumbai on Saturday resulted in one fatality and three injuries. The incident occurred amid heavy rainfall affecting Maharashtra.

The collapse happened at Rubinnisa Manzil, located on Sleater Road near Grant Road railway station. The structure, weakened by continuous rain, saw a portion of the balcony and slab from the second and third floors, as well as part of the fourth-floor ground, giving way. Some sections of the building were left precariously hanging.

The collapse occurred around 11 a.m., according to officials. “Four persons were injured after some part of the balcony collapsed. They were rushed to a local hospital, where a woman was declared dead, while three others are undergoing treatment,” reported a fire department officer.

The deceased woman, approximately 70 years old, has not yet been identified. The building, managed by the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), had been flagged as dangerous by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which had previously issued a notice about it.

Rescue operations by the fire department have saved thirteen people from the building, though about seven to eight remain trapped inside the partially collapsed structure. Efforts to rescue those still trapped continue.

On Saturday, Mumbai and surrounding areas experienced intermittent heavy rain, causing waterlogging in some regions. Despite this, train and flight services were not disrupted. Traffic diversions were implemented in areas such as Kurla and Goregaon East due to waterlogging. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Chandrapur and an orange alert for Nagpur, Amravati, and Wardha districts.
