Mumbai police claimed a 26-year-old man was beaten to death in Borivali East after being mistaken for a thief, and that five others were arrested in connection with the assault on Friday.

“We arrested the five…for death due to rash or negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide, unlawful assembly, assault with a weapon, rioting, etc,” said deputy police commissioner (zone 12) Smita Patil.

According to police, they were notified of the attack at 4 a.m. on Thursday and discovered Pravin Lahane injured on the ground when a team got to the scene. According to police, a gang of males beat him after mistaking him for a robber.

Lahane later passed out inside the Kasturba Marg Police Station and was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

According to police, Lahane was inebriated when he entered a demolished building. “CCTV footage from the area shows him jumping across a boundary wall, which may have led to people mistaking him for a robber and beating him,” stated an unnamed officer.
