On a day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a day visit to Maharashtra, many of the Congress leaders were detained for staging protest over the collapse of a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Sindhudurg district earlier this week.

Congress MP from North Mumbai took to X and said, “We have been detained for raising our voice for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, for Maharashtra’s pride. But we will not be deterred. The Prime Minister must apologise for the insult to our icon.”

The Congress leaders and workers were detained for staging protest over the collapse of Shivaji statue in the state.

Earlier in the day, heavy police presence has been deployed at the residence of Mumbai Congress President Gaikwad, turning the building into a virtual police camp.

According to party leaders, police also detained key Congress leaders across the city.
Palghar district Congress president was also stopped by police when he was on the way to protest.

Earlier, several posters came up in Mumbai over the alleged ongoing corruption of ruling government.

The Congress alleged that the state government didn’t even spare the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

In a tweet, the Congress from its official X handle targeted the state government and said, “Narendra Modi unveiled a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Sindhudurg, Maharashtra. But the statue collapsed after just 8 months.” “This is proof of the corruption spread in the government. This is an insult to Maratha pride. The people of Maharashtra will not forgive Narendra Modi,” it added.

In the backdrop of the incident, posters demanding apology from Prime Minister Modi, who is visiting Maharashtra today was seen across Mumbai. The posters mocked the government for their failure to preserve the culture of Maharashtra and for disrespecting Shivraj Maharaj was launched by Mumbai Youth Congress President Akhilesh Yadav.
In the backdrop of the protest, Congress workers have been detained from their home in the morning. Modi is on a day long visit to Maharashtra. Earlier in the day, Modi addressed the Global Fintech Fest 2024 at Mumbai’s Jio World Convention Centre, the prime minister said that the country’s fintech revolution is improving financial inclusion as well as driving innovation.

He will lay the foundation stone for the Vadhvan Port project in Palghar, which will be one of India’s largest deep-water ports.

To be built at a cost of Rs 76,000 crore, the project aims to create a state-of-the-art maritime gateway that is expected to enhance India’s trade capabilities.

He will also inaugurate 218 fisheries projects worth around Rs 1,560 crore, aimed at upgrading the infrastructure and productivity of the fisheries sector nationwide.
