Around 39 flamingos lost their lives in a recent incident in the Laxmi Nagar locality of Pantnagar in Ghatkopar, Mumbai, due to a collision with an Emirates flight. The impact resulted in the birds’ bodies being found in various places, including inside people’s homes.
Authorities, including teams from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Air Traffic Control (ATC), and the Forest Department, swiftly responded to the scene upon receiving the news. A BMC official reported that the flock of flamingos collided with the Emirates flight in the Laxmi Buag area, leading to the tragic loss. Search operations are ongoing to assess the extent of injuries and any further impact on the flamingo population.
The Forest Department has initiated post-mortem examinations to ascertain the exact cause of death for the deceased birds. Measures are being discussed and implemented to prevent such incidents in the future.
Mumbai Bay is renowned for its seasonal influx of flamingos, drawing bird enthusiasts from December to May. The timing around high tides is particularly favorable for observing these majestic birds.
