Recently, the central government presented the Union Budget. Himachal MP Anurag Thakur addressed the media about the budget’s achievements at the Chandigarh BJP office on Sunday. He praised the budget, stating that it benefits everyone in the community. However, he did not address the ongoing financial crisis of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, nor did he mention Chandigarh in his speech.
In a recent meeting, Municipal Commissioner Anandita Mitra confirmed that the corporation lacks funds, resulting in halted projects. Political tensions are high, with Congress blaming the BJP for the situation, while the BJP claims that the financial decline began after Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party took power in the Municipal Corporation.
Chandigarh BJP spokesperson Sanjeev Rana stated that the corporation’s financial condition has deteriorated since the Aam Aadmi Party and Congress assumed control. He highlighted that the corporation had to lease land for Rs 40 lakh per month to the Chandigarh Administration for building a school and dispensary in Indira Colony of Manimajra.
In contrast, Congress councilor Gurpreet Guppy accused the BJP of financial mismanagement, stating that during the Congress-ruled Municipal Corporation, the corporation had an FD of Rs 500 crore. He blamed the BJP for depleting these funds and for not passing the budget through the Governor, which led to the current financial crisis. He also criticized former MP Kirron Kher for not advocating for increased funding from the Centre during her tenure. Guppy asserted that the Aam Aadmi Party and Congress have only had the opportunity to govern since April and are committed to prioritizing projects that benefit the people.
