Motorhome travel is growing more popular every year. In fact, campervans are set to make up almost a quarter of leisure vehicles by 2030. They are an excellent way to go on a last-minute holiday without needing to consider accommodation or transport. You just need to book a campsite, and you’re good to go.

In comparison, traditional transportation methods, like car rentals and air travel, require far more planning and coordination. There’s also accommodation to book on top of these travel methods, and there’s less flexibility.

In this article, we run through the advantages and disadvantages of motorhome travel.

Advantages of travelling in a motorhome

In a campervan, you have the freedom to choose the different destinations and routes you want to go on. You can change your plans on the go if the weather takes a turn and adopt a much more flexible approach to travel. It’s also cost-effective as your transport and accommodation is all-in-one. With traditional travel, you would need to pay for a car rental and hotel.

You can start by renting a motorhome to see if it’s the right fit for your family. Then, if you have the funds to do so, you can buy a campervan outright. That way, you have unlimited access to the campervan and could go on holiday every weekend if you want to.

Motorhomes also have their own kitchen, so you don’t need to eat out every evening. You can whip some of your favourite dishes on the go and save money on food expenses. Having all your necessary amenities on board makes your holiday easy, comfortable and convenient. You don’t need to worry about finding a bathroom because you have one on board!

Disadvantages of travelling in a motorhome

Motorhomes come in different sizes, but most of them are large. This makes driving your motorhome difficult on small roads, and manoeuvrability can be a challenge. If you struggle to drive large vehicles, you could take a few lessons to get some tips from a professional.

If you own your motorhome, there are also maintenance costs to contend with. It’s your responsibility to fix things and to take out motorhome insurance. The fuel efficiency also tends to be lower compared to smaller vehicles, so costs could rack up.

Traditional travel

Traditional travel is quicker and more efficient. You can explore a wider range of places with air travel, and there are more accommodation options on the market. However, these benefits come with a higher cost and the need for advanced bookings. Traditional travel comes with a lot more planning, and you don’t have the convenience of all your amenities already on board.

Motorhomes and traditional travel both have their perks. But the right choice for you really depends on your requirements and travel preferences.
