as amongst the main reason for their sleep disturbances.
The World Malaria Day this year brought to light a pressing concern for India’s productivity: mosquito-induced sleep disturbances. According to a survey re port by Goodknight, India’s leading household insecticide brand under Godrej Consumer Products Ltd (GCPL), more than half of India’s productivity, a staggering 58%, is being impacted due to disturbed sleep caused by mosquitoes. This revelation underscores the urgent need to address mosquito-borne diseases and implement effective control measures.
The survey, titled ‘One Mosquito, Countless Threats,’ was conducted by market research firm YouGov and involved respondents from across four regions of India – North, South, West, and East. Of particular concern is the significant impact on both male and female productivity, with 62% of males and 53% of females expressing that their work efficiency is hampered due to mosquito-related sleep disruptions. This is alarming considering India’s re cent economic surge, where a healthy and productive workforce is paramount.
The economic burden of mosquito-borne diseases in India is substantial, amounting to approximately INR 16,000 crores. This includes the loss of earnings by individuals, accounting for about 75% of the bur den, along with healthcare expenses. With more than 40 million Indians affected by mosquito-borne diseases annually, addressing this issue is crucial to maintaining the productivity of the Indian economy.
Ashwin Moorthy, Chief Marketing Officer – India, GCPL, emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the mosquito problem in India and offering affordable yet innovative solutions. He highlighted the need for a healthy workforce to sustain economic growth and proposed resolving the rising trend of mosquito borne diseases as a pragmatic approach.
The survey also revealed that mosquitoes significantly contribute to people’s inability to sleep well, with 50% of adults across India identifying them as a major reason for sleep disturbances. Interestingly, respondents from Western India (56%) were most inclined to agree with this statement, followed by North (52%), South (47%), and East (42%). Moreover, men (54%) were more likely to acknowledge this sentiment compared to women (46%).
Commenting on the sur vey findings, Dr. Kirti Sab nis, an Infectious Disease Specialist at Fortis Hospital, Mulund, Mumbai, stressed the critical role of mosquitoes in transmitting life-threatening diseases. She highlighted the silent yet pervasive spread of ail ments such as dengue and malaria and emphasized the collective responsibility to safeguard against mosquito borne diseases for healthier and more productive lives.
In response to the growing health risks posed by mosquitoes, Goodknight has been actively raising public awareness and providing innovative mosquito repel lent solutions. Recently, it launched India’s first gov ernment-approved anti mosquito incense stick, the Goodknight Agarbatti, as a safe alternative to chemical laden imports. This initia tive reflects the brand’s com mitment to collaborating in the fight against mosquitoes and ensuring a healthier fu ture for India. In conclusion, the Good knight survey sheds light on the significant impact of mosquito-induced sleep disturbances on India’s productivity.
Addressing this issue requires concerted efforts from all stakeholders to combat mosquito borne diseases effectively and ensure a healthier and more productive workforce.
