In honour of World Calligraphy Day, the Mohammed Bin Rashid Library held a panel discussion titled “Arabic Calligraphy Between Creativity and Innovation.” The session, moderated by Bader Al Awadi, featured prominent Emirati calligraphers Narjes Noureddine, Maryam Al Balooshi, and Zaid Al Athamy.

The panel began with an exploration of calligraphy’s role and importance in Arab and Islamic cultures, including its historical evolution and its reflection of Islamic aesthetics. The discussion then moved to how the art form is being adapted for the 21st century. The panellists examined how modern technologies are being incorporated into calligraphy, the effects of technological advancements on tools, techniques, and artworks, and how to balance innovation with the preservation of traditional authenticity.

During the session, participants explored various contemporary calligraphy artworks and discussed the use of calligraphy in architectural decoration, citing the Museum of the Future as a prime example of merging calligraphy with modern design. The panellists emphasised the need to train future generations through specialized programs and workshops. They also addressed the challenges faced by modern calligraphy artists and the opportunities to showcase this art form globally, serving as a bridge to unite diverse cultures. Additionally, they highlighted the involvement of Arab calligraphy artists in international art exhibitions and their role in promoting Arab culture.

Alongside the panel discussion, the Library hosted an exhibit featuring calligraphy tools, offering attendees a glimpse into the art’s rich heritage. Visitors also explored the Treasures of The Library exhibition, which showcased a rare collection of tools used by ancient calligraphers from around the globe. Since its establishment, the Mohammed Bin Rashid Library has maintained a strong focus on calligraphy by organising workshops and exhibitions to support calligraphers and celebrate the art’s unique beauty through rare texts and both ancient and contemporary tools.
