A Purdue University student from India, Neel Acharya, who was reported missing on Sunday, has been officially confirmed as deceased, as stated by the Tippecanoe County Coroner. The authorities were alerted to a possible dead body on Purdue’s campus, and upon arrival, they discovered the lifeless body of the college-aged male, identified as Neel Acharya.
On Sunday, Neel’s mother, Gaury Acharya, sought help on X, stating that her son had been missing since the early hours of January 28. The Consulate General of India in Chicago responded, assuring support and communication with Purdue University authorities and Neel’s family.
Gaury Acharya, mother of the deceased student, in a post on X, appealed, “Our son Neel Acharya is missing since yesterday Jan 28 (12:30 AM EST) He is studying in Purdue University in the US. He was last seen by the Uber driver who dropped him off in Purdue university. We are looking for any info on him. Please help us if you know anything.”
The Consulate General of India in Chicago replied to her post on X, saying, “Consulate is in touch with Purdue University authorities and also with Neel’s family. Consulate will extend all possible support and help.”
The Purdue Exponent, an independent multimedia agency, reported that the university’s computer science department received an email from interim CS head Chris Clifton confirming Neel Acharya’s death.
This tragic incident follows another recent case of violence against an Indian student, where an individual was brutally attacked with a hammer in Lithonia, Georgia. The victim’s remains were repatriated to India on January 24.
