Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, who won a silver medal at the Olympics, placed fourth in the women’s 49 kg competition on Saturday at the Asian Games in Hangzhou. Chanu’s performance in the game wasn’t her finest. She was able to lift 83 kg in snatch, but she was unable to lift 86 kg on her following two attempts. She was able to lift 108 kg in the clean and jerk on her first try but failed to lift 117 kg on her subsequent two efforts. She lifted a total of 191 kilograms.
Ri Song-gum of North Korea won the gold. She reserved her strongest lift for the clean and jerk, lifting 92 kg in the snatch category. She set a world record, an Asian record, and an Asian Games record by lifting an enormous 124 kg in the clean and jerk. Her total lift of 216 kg is a world record as well.
Huihua Jiang of China won the silver medal. In the snatch category, she chose 94 kg, and in the clean and jerk category, 119 kg. Her total weight lifted came to 213 kg.
Thanyathon Sukcharoean of Thailand won the bronze. She lifted 109 kg in the clean and jerk division after lifting 90 kg in the snatch category. Her total weight lifted was 199 kg. Chanu missed out on a podium spot by nine kilograms. At 4:30 pm IST, Bindyarani Devi will compete in the women’s 55 kg division. The weightlifting competitions are being held in Hangzhou from September 30 to October 7 with 14 gold medals up for grabs.
