Indian IT professional Amit Gupta has remained in Qatari custody since January 1. The Indian embassy in Qatar is actively monitoring his case and staying in constant touch with his family, legal representatives, and Qatari officials. While authorities have not disclosed specific charges, reports suggest his detention is linked to an ongoing investigation.
Who is Amit Gupta?
Amit Gupta is a senior executive at Tech Mahindra with over a decade of experience in Qatar. Originally from Vadodara, Gujarat, he moved to Doha in 2013. For the past three years, he has served as the region head for Qatar and Kuwait, managing business operations. Before this role, he worked as a senior sales manager and client partner at Tech Mahindra. His career also includes positions at Nucleus Software Exports and Infosys.
Gupta holds a B.Tech in Computer Science from Malaviya National Institute of Technology, Jaipur, and later earned an MBA in Marketing and Systems from the International Management Institute (IMI), New Delhi. According to his parents, unidentified individuals took him away while he was out for a meal on January 1. Since then, his family has appealed to the Prime Minister’s Office and other authorities for help.
Why Was Amit Gupta Detained?
Qatari authorities have not officially stated the reason for Gupta’s arrest. However, multiple reports suggest he is being held on suspicion of data theft. His family strongly denies these allegations and insists on his innocence.
His father claims that Qatar’s state security detained him, while his wife and elderly parents are making desperate efforts to secure his release. His mother has accused the Qatari authorities of mistreating him.
“He was kept seated for about 48 hours without food. He was then shifted to a room and has been there for nearly three months now,” his mother, Pushpa Gupta, told IANS.
When asked why he was arrested, she responded, “Someone in the company must have done something. He was arrested because he is the country head.”
His family receives only a five-minute phone call from him every Wednesday. During these brief conversations, he repeatedly pleads, “Get me out of here as soon as possible,” as reported by India Today.
Recently, his parents traveled to Doha, where they met him for just 30 minutes after the Indian ambassador’s intervention. His mother shared that he described the difficult conditions he is enduring.
