According to a US official, a last-minute complication has emerged in the Gaza ceasefire-for-hostages agreement, and US diplomats are striving to solve the matter. The dispute centers around the identities of several prisoners Hamas is demanding be released as part of the deal.
US President Joe Biden’s Middle East envoy, Brett McGurk, and President-elect Donald Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, are holding meetings in Doha today in trying to hammer out an agreement with Qatari and Egyptian negotiators. The official was sanguine that the issue would be resolved soon.
According to White House national security spokesperson John Kirby, Washington is well aware of the conflict and is working strenuously with the Israeli government and regional partners to address it. “We are confident these implementing details can be hammered out and that the deal will move forward this weekend,” Kirby added.
The ceasefire agreement was reached on Wednesday and was expected to be implemented on Sunday. However, this last-minute glitch is raising concerns regarding the smooth rollout of the deal. Diplomats remain hopeful that the issue will be settled in time for the agreement to proceed as planned.
