The Israeli military has disclosed details of a covert operation carried out on September 8, 2024, to dismantle an Iranian-funded underground missile production site in Syria. The operation, described as a significant achievement in safeguarding Israel’s security, involved the deployment of over 100 elite soldiers from the Kingfisher unit.

Precision Operation Deep Inside Syria

The Israeli Air Force (IAF) shared footage and details of the operation, revealing that the target was a precision missile production facility located in the Masyaf area, west of Hama, Syria. This site, codenamed “Deep Layer,” was reportedly funded and supported by Iran to bolster its proxies, including Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Assad regime in Syria.

The facility housed advanced machinery for producing precision missiles and long-range rockets. The operation, internally referred to as “Operation Many Ways,” aimed to neutralise the threat posed by this site, which was a key element of Iran’s regional military strategy.

Coordinated Air and Ground Assault

The complex operation included a coordinated assault involving helicopters, fighter jets, naval ships, and fire cover. Soldiers landed in the area, dismantled critical production equipment such as planetary mixers, and secured numerous weapons and intelligence documents. The facility was completely destroyed before the forces safely returned to Israel.

Strategic Significance of the Mission

Israeli Air Force Commander Major General Tomer Bar highlighted the operation’s importance, describing it as essential to the nation’s security. He credited years of intelligence efforts and meticulous planning for the mission’s success.
“This was a flagship project for Iran, aiming to arm proxies near Israel’s northern border. Our forces ensured its complete destruction, marking a significant step in ensuring regional stability,” Bar stated.

Advanced Facility Neutralised

The targeted site, built into a mountain at the Scientific Studies and Research Center (SSRC) in Masyaf, was located more than 200 kilometers from Israel’s border. This advanced facility was equipped with cutting-edge production lines intended to significantly enhance the missile arsenal of Hezbollah and other Iranian-backed groups.
