Lebanese President Joseph Aoun vowed on Saturday to hold accountable those responsible for the attack on a United Nations peacekeeping convoy that injured the force’s outgoing deputy commander a day earlier.

A statement from the presidency, posted on X, said Aoun “condemned the attack… and emphasised that the attackers will receive their punishment.”

It further stated, “Security forces will not be lenient with any party that tries to upset stability and civil peace.”

For two consecutive nights, Hezbollah supporters blocked the road leading to Lebanon’s only international airport in protest of a decision preventing two Iranian planes from landing in Beirut. The army reported that the area saw unruly demonstrations on Friday.

The UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) called for an investigation after one of its vehicles was torched during the Friday night incident, injuring outgoing deputy force commander Chok Bahadur Dhakal as he was on his way home.

The Lebanese army vowed to take decisive action against those responsible, while the interior minister convened an emergency meeting of the Central Internal Security Council on Saturday morning.

According to the presidency’s statement, Aoun checked on the deputy commander’s condition following the incident, emphasizing that such an event “cannot be allowed to be repeated.”

The statement also noted that he had “followed up on developments regarding roadblocks, setting fires and riots, and issued directives to the army and security forces to put a stop to these practices,” while adding that the judiciary “has begun investigations on the ground.”
