On Saturday, a landslide occurred at a landfill in the Kiteezi district of Kampala, Uganda, killing eight people, including two children. According to reports from local media, the collapse, which buried homes and animals, besides the people living in the area, was triggered by heavy rains.
The tragedy was announced by the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) on X (formerly Twitter): “On a very sad note, eight people have so far been found dead, six adults and two children.” The 14 other people were all rescued and admitted to the hospital, but their conditions were not immediately known.
“The rescue operation is still ongoing and we shall share updates as they come in,” the KCCA added. Images from the scene showed an excavator moving through the debris as local residents looked on. Authorities with KCCA said that the collapse was due to a “structural failure in waste mass,” and assured that efforts were underway to secure the area to avert further incidence.
