Nimisha’s Allegations Against Mahdi
Nimisha began to complain about Mahdi’s behavior, claiming he physically abused her. Mr. Thomas said she alleged that Mahdi took her money, seized her passport, and even threatened her with a gun.
The Murder Charges
In 2017, after Mahdi’s body was found, the police charged Nimisha with his murder. They claimed she gave him an “overdose of sedatives” and dismembered his body. Nimisha denied the charges. Her lawyer argued she only intended to sedate Mahdi to retrieve her passport, but the dose was accidentally too high.
Court Decisions and Rejection of Appeal
In 2020, a local court sentenced Nimisha to death. Three years later, her family appealed to Yemen’s Supreme Court, but the appeal was rejected. Despite this, the family remains hopeful.
A Father’s Concern for His Daughter
Mr. Thomas continues to believe that they can save Nimisha. “My heart says that we can arrive at a settlement and save Nimisha’s life,” he said. His greatest worry is for their 13-year-old daughter, who has “never experienced a mother’s love.” He added, “They speak on the phone every week, and my daughter gets upset if she misses the call. She needs her mother. What will she do without her?”
