Elon Musk has revealed plans to construct a “Loop” underground road network in Dubai, according to a report by AFP. His company, The Boring Company, has partnered with Dubai authorities to tackle the city’s growing traffic congestion.

The Boring Company has already implemented a similar system in Las Vegas, where Tesla vehicles transport passengers through narrow, one-way tunnels for a fee. Now, a new Loop is set to be developed in Dubai, offering an alternative transit solution in the city.

“It’s gonna be like a wormhole – you just wormhole from one part of the city, boom, and you’re out in another part of the city,” Musk said via videolink at the World Governments Summit in Dubai, as per the AFP report.

While specific details of the Dubai project are yet to be disclosed, the existing Vegas Loop features four stops, with a five-minute, eight-kilometre (five-mile) ride priced at $10. “I think (when) people try it out, they’ll be like, ‘This is really cool.’ And it’s so obvious in retrospect, but until you actually do it you don’t know,” Musk added.

Despite an extensive network of six-lane highways, Dubai continues to grapple with traffic congestion, fueled by its rapidly expanding population of 3.6 million.

UAE Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence Omar Al Olama, who announced the collaboration with Musk, stated that the Loop will “cover Dubai’s most densely populated areas for people to go from point to point” seamlessly.

This initiative is separate from the Musk-inspired Hyperloop, a proposed ultra-high-speed transit system utilizing vacuum-sealed tubes. Plans for a Hyperloop between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, first introduced in 2016, have yet to materialize.
