Palestinian journalist Anas Al-Sharif, known for his courageous reporting from Gaza, marked the announcement of a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas with a symbolic gesture that quickly went viral. In a heartwarming video, the Al Jazeera reporter removed his helmet and press vest — protective gear that had become part of his daily existence during months of relentless conflict. Standing amidst jubilant Palestinians in Gaza City, Al-Sharif declared, “Now, I can finally take off this helmet that has exhausted me and this vest, which has become part of my body.”
He continued his emotional report, saying, “From this place in the middle of Gaza City, we announce the ceasefire agreement for the people and residents of the Gaza Strip who have endured bombings, genocide, and displacement.” The video captured a rare moment of celebration as a man lifted Al-Sharif onto his shoulders while the ceasefire announcement offered a glimmer of hope for the war-torn region.
Al-Sharif has been on the frontlines since the war began on October 7, 2023, enduring threats to his life and the devastating loss of his 90-year-old father. His family home was reportedly bombed in December 2023, leaving his father unable to escape due to poor health. The rest of his family had been evacuated to a UNRWA school for safety. Despite these hardships, Al-Sharif continued his vital work, shedding light on the atrocities faced by Gaza’s residents.
The brief respite provided by the ceasefire was shattered within hours as Israeli airstrikes resumed on Thursday. Al-Sharif, who had momentarily set aside his protective gear, donned it again, posting on Instagram, “I’m back to putting on my armor and journal helmet while people were celebrating the news of the ceasefire on Gaza. Unfortunately, the pace of Israeli targets and massacres is increasing in various areas of the Gaza Strip.”
According to Mahmud Bassal, spokesperson for Gaza’s civil defence agency, at least 73 people were killed in renewed strikes following the ceasefire declaration. Residents, who had hoped for peace, woke up to fresh devastation and loss, underscoring the fragile and volatile nature of the conflict.
