The Israeli military confirmed on Friday that it conducted airstrikes on two military bases in central Syria, including one in Palmyra. The attack followed reports from the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which claimed that Israeli warplanes had targeted the Palmyra military airport.

According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the strikes were aimed at eliminating strategic military assets still present at the Tadmur and T4 bases—located in Palmyra and approximately 50 kilometers west of the city.

Israel’s Justification for the Strikes

Israel has carried out numerous air raids in Syria in recent months, stating that its goal is to prevent advanced weaponry from reaching the new Syrian administration. Since the overthrow of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in December, Israel has raised concerns that the new leadership—comprised partly of former Islamist factions—poses a security threat.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reiterated his stance on maintaining a demilitarized zone in southern Syria, warning that his country will not tolerate military forces from the new Syrian government near its borders.

Syria Responds to the Attack

The Syrian foreign ministry strongly condemned the airstrikes, accusing Israel of attempting to destabilize the country. Meanwhile, the new Syrian administration, which has sought to distance itself from its previous ties to extremist groups, has not issued an official response.

With tensions escalating, the region remains on high alert as Israel continues its military operations to counter what it perceives as security threats from Syria’s evolving political landscape.
