PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti canceled her election campaign on Sunday in solidarity with the people of Lebanon following the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut.
In a post on X, the former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir expressed, “I am canceling my campaign tomorrow in solidarity with the martyrs of Lebanon and Gaza, especially Hassan Nasrallah. We stand with the people of Palestine and Lebanon during this time of immense grief and exemplary resistance.”
Hassan Nasrallah, the secretary-general of Hezbollah, was killed along with his daughter Zainab on Friday as Israeli forces conducted a series of strikes in the densely populated Dahiyeh suburb of Beirut. The attack, intended to target Nasrallah, resulted in six additional fatalities.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) stated in a post on X, “Hassan Nasrallah will no longer be able to terrorize the world.”
Other Hezbollah operatives, including Ali Karaki, Muhammad Ali Ismail, and Hossein Ahmed Ismail, were also killed in the airstrikes, which continued into late Saturday. The Israeli military reported that the strike occurred while Hezbollah’s top leaders were at their headquarters coordinating activities against Israeli citizens.
Meanwhile, protests took place in Budgam and Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, on Saturday in response to Nasrallah’s killing. Demonstrators were seen in large numbers, carrying images of the Hezbollah leader.
Maulana Yasoob Abbas, the General Secretary of the All India Shia Personal Law Board (AISPLB), paid tribute to Nasrallah, describing his death as “a great loss for the Muslim world.” He called on India’s Shia community to observe three days of mourning and to display black flags at their homes. Abbas also urged the United Nations to intervene and help end the violence faced by the people of Palestine and Lebanon.
