Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi on Monday to discuss the current situation in Bangladesh and its effects on the North East region.

During the meeting, which also included Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, concerns from border region residents were addressed. Sangma shared on X that Shah reviewed the ongoing situation and emphasized the government’s commitment to securing the borders and maintaining peace and harmony.

Bangladesh is experiencing a turbulent political climate following Sheikh Hasina’s resignation on August 5 amid escalating protests.

In Meghalaya, the NPP-led coalition, with support from 45 MLAs and two BJP members, formed the government last year. Sangma, who secured a second term as Chief Minister, won the South Tura seat by a margin of 5,016 votes against BJP’s Bernard N Marak. The Assembly composition includes 26 seats for NPP, 11 for UDP, 5 for Congress, and 5 for Trinamool Congress, among others. The BJP and NPP, previously allies, contested the 2023 assembly elections separately.
