New KP.3.1.1 COVID-19 Variant Surge In US: What You Need To Know

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that the KP.3.1.1 COVID-19 variant has become the dominant strain in the US. According to the CDC’s Nowcast data tracker, KP.3.1.1 now accounts for 27.8% of positive infections, surpassing KP.3, which represents 20.1% of cases as of the two-week period ending August 3. The KP.3.1.1 variant is closely related to other circulating variants, all of which descend from the JN.1 lineage that emerged in late 2023.

Current Impact and Expectations

Rosa Norman from the CDC stated that, despite the variant’s prevalence, current COVID-19 treatments and vaccines are expected to remain effective against it. The CDC will continue monitoring the variant’s severity and the effectiveness of existing vaccines.

Symptoms of KP.3.1.1 Variant

Symptoms of the KP.3.1.1 variant are similar to those of other COVID-19 strains and may include:

1. Fever or chills
2. Persistent cough
3. Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
4. Fatigue
5. Muscle or body aches
6. Headache
7. New loss of taste or smell
8. Sore throat
9. Congestion or runny nose
10. Nausea or vomiting
11. Diarrhea

Prevention Measures

To protect yourself from the KP.3.1.1 variant:

  • Vaccination: Stay fully vaccinated and get booster doses as recommended to reduce severity and hospitalizations.
  • Mask-Wearing: Use a well-fitted mask in crowded or high-transmission areas.
  • Hand Hygiene: Wash hands frequently with soap and water or use hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid Touching Face: Minimize touching your face to prevent virus transfer.
  • Social Distancing: Maintain a distance of at least 6 feet from others.
  • Ventilation: Improve air quality in indoor spaces through ventilation or air filtration systems.
  • Monitor Health: Be aware of symptoms and seek testing if needed. Stay home if unwell.
  • Regular Testing: Get tested if exposed to COVID-19 or if symptoms develop.
  • Avoid Crowds: Stay away from crowded, poorly ventilated areas.

By following these measures, you can help reduce the spread of the KP.3.1.1 variant and protect yourself and others.
