BUDDING SURGEONS WILL LEARN ADVANCED TECHNIQUES IN PGIMER’S ADVANCED SKILL LAB: DR GURPREET SINGH

Department of Surgery of Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh, now has the Advanced Skill Lab that would help budding surgeons learn basic surgical skills in the lab, rather than practising on the human body. This was the statement of the Head of the Department of Surgery, Dr Gurpreet Singh. Before his superannuation, he wishes to start three unique initiatives—Interactive Flat Platform, Advanced Skill Lab, and Intervention Room in the department—so that after him, the department and the resident doctors shall continue to achieve new milestones in the field of surgery.

Dr Gurpreet Singh told The Daily Guardian, “The Advanced Lab is a place wherein, with advanced machinery and methods, budding surgeons learn the basic surgery skills. PGIMER had a skill lab earlier in the New OPD but it was not this dedicated. Resident doctors used to learn many new things from patients only. Now, they will be trained before touching the patients’ bodies. This lab would also teach surgeons to learn advanced surgical procedures like Laparoscopy, and that will help them deal with complicated surgeries.”

Dr Singh further added that they started an Interactive Flat Platform classroom wherein Students with any of his senior consultants could listen, interact or attend the online session of any top surgeons from any country. In this way, Students would be able to understand new emerging surgical skills from different parts of countries and also would get help from the consultant sitting next to them.

The Department of Surgery also has initiated an Intervention Room wherein patients suffering from vascular diseases or venous disorders would be treated extensively with the help of advanced techniques. Dr. Singh told The Daily Guardian that there are more than thousands of Breast Cancer surgeries that he has performed in thirty years, and that he has taught more than thousands of surgeons who are now excelling in different parts of the globe.
