Beyond Brushing: Nourishing foods that support your dental wellness

What we eat has a big impact on our oral hygiene. The right food choices not only contribute to healthy teeth and gums but also our overall health. We all know that foods that are high in sugar are bad for our teeth so while including tooth-healthy foods in our diet, we should also avoid sugary foods.
Clean teeth equal fewer bacteria in the mouth. The food we chew is turned into a ‘bolus’ with saliva entering the stomach. If the saliva and oral cavity are healthy, the food will remain hygienic. There are certain foods that get into our system and provide extra vitamins to the enamel of our teeth so that it gets stronger and healthier. Stronger teeth mean we will be able to chew better and digest better. Here are some foods that are good for our oral cavity.
Turmeric (Haldi): Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, possesses anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. It can help reduce gum inflammation, prevent bacterial growth in the mouth, and promote overall oral health.
Clove (Laung) contains eugenol, a natural compound with analgesic and antiseptic properties. It can provide relief from toothaches and help prevent oral infections. Clove oil is often used in traditional dental treatments.
Cinnamon (Dalchini) has antimicrobial properties that can inhibit the growth of bacteria in the mouth. It can help combat bad breath and maintain a healthier oral environment.
Apples have a fibrous texture that stimulates saliva production and helps cleanse the teeth. They also contain vitamins and antioxidants that support gum health.
Sesame Oil: The technique of oil pulling is an Ayurvedic practice that involves swishing oil (usually sesame oil) in the mouth to improve oral hygiene. It has antibacterial properties and oil pulling is believed to help remove toxins and promote healthier gums.
Ghee: Consuming small amounts of clarified butter (ghee) is believed to be beneficial for oral health in Ayurveda. Ghee is thought to help balance oral microbes and soothe oral tissues.
Maintaining good dental health is essential for overall well-being, and the role of nutrition in this context cannot be overlooked. The Indian subcontinent boasts a rich culinary heritage that offers an array of nutritional foods known for their dental health benefits.
By incorporating these foods into your diet, you can take proactive steps toward maintaining strong teeth and gums. Remember that while these foods can greatly contribute to dental health, they are most effective when combined with regular oral hygiene practices such as brushing, flossing, and regular dental check-ups.
